GGDF PSM

This is a public service message to all you Prius owners.

If your accelerator gets stuck while your driving. PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL!!

That is all.

Kind of what I was thinking too

Problem is their "shifter" is electronic. If the car has gone nuts then that might not work or even go out of drive. So is the "start" button, so you can't turn the key to make it stop.

Wrap it around a tree and call it a day.

Dude, my brother and I were saying that after the CHP dude and his family were killed near my house a few months ago because of the stuck throttle. And then a couple days ago the dude on i-8 in Pine Valley was on the phone with 911 and you can hear the operator ask him twice if he tried putting it in neutral and his response was, "I'm trying to control this car." At that point he was doing 81 mph. Trying to control the car? Shit, I drive 80mph + on a regular basis and it's not any different than if I was trying to "control" my truck at 55mph. GMAFB! I think these people just panic or something, 'cause no one can be that stupid can they? Never mind. Rhetorical question. I guess you're really not that smart if you bought a Prius in the first place...

SandraV, I had initially thought that question as part of my post, but i deleted it. I thought "What car doesn't have a gearshift?" Now I know.

My wife drives a Prius(don't ask!) and I had her try to shift into neutral while driving down the road. It won't shift. It's all electronically controlled. I'm going to try it myself, but I suspect that what she told me is true. It won't shift if the car is in motion.

A great thing, electronics, right up to the point they get you killed.

That being said, I still suspect that a LARGE majority of the problems are being caused by operator headspace.

Okay, let's assume all this drive-by-wire bullshit prevents the driver from shifting into neutral or turning off the engine. Are the braking systems in all these different types of vehicles so weak-assed that they cannot be stopped even if the vehicle is under acceleration? A Prius has 98 piss-ant horsepower. For stopping it has 4 wheel anti-lock disk brakes. I find it pretty fucking unbelievable that a person can't stop a Prius with just the brakes. Hell, you could probably stop a Prius using the Fred Flinstone method.

Furthermore, until an independent lab can reproduce the unintended acceleration, I say all these claims are bullshit and the people making the claims are either retarded or liars.

fuck all this electronic bullshit. I want mechanical linkages and switches!

OK, did the testing my self. It IS possible to switch to Neutral while driving down the road. Doesn't mean the electronics couldn't screw up, but it can be done.

Amen Warilla. I'm sold on Toyota trucks. I won't buy anything but a truck from Mr. Toyoda. I've had nothing but a good experience owning Toyota trucks for the last many years. If it ain't broke, why fix it? Sank you...
